About Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a process of paying attention moment-to-moment to our experience, noticing our breath, physical sensations, sounds, thoughts, and emotions--things we ordinarily ignore. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, “It is a systematic approach to developing new kinds of . . . wisdom in our lives, based on our inner capacities for relaxation, paying attention, awareness, and insight” (Kabat-Zinn, 2005, p. 2).

Research has found that mindfulness is helpful in reducing illness and pain, stress and anxiety. Brain science shows that people who practice mindfulness have greater happiness and well being, and enhanced neuroplasticity.

Mindfulness brings greater resilience as practitioners learn to be with physical challenges and relational interactions with greater ease and relaxation. The New York Times noted beneficial changes from mindfulness meditation--changes that are both behavioral and physical, improving concentration and enhancing the brain’s ability to integrate information.

Learning mindfulness revolves around learning to guide our awareness and attention. By concentrating the mind on an object of meditation such as the breath, we learn to steady and calm the mind. Our reactivity lessens, and we develop greater happiness and joy. The transformation that occurs with this process has been scientifically documented, and brain science research has shown the positive benefits on the brain’s functioning that occur through mindfulness meditation.
